Traveling to Sweden with your dog: documents, passport and transport

This is the step that worries most people before a BYOD stay — and it's actually the simplest to sort out, provided you start early. Here's what you need to know for a dog coming from a European Union country. (Rules evolved in 2026: always check the current version on the Swedish authority's website, Jordbruksverket.)

Three essentials from the EU

Microchip identification. Your dog must be microchipped with a compliant chip before anything else. The order matters: the chip must come before the rabies vaccine, otherwise the vaccine is not valid.

Rabies vaccination. The dog must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of primary vaccination, and you must wait at least 21 days after it before traveling. If your dog is already vaccinated, check with your vet that the booster is current — an expired vaccination is treated as a new primary vaccination, with a new 21-day waiting period.

European pet passport. Issued by an authorized veterinarian, it brings together the chip, the vaccine and your contact details. It is valid for life as long as the rabies vaccination remains current. This is what opens EU borders to you.

Good news: no mandatory worming treatment

Unlike Finland or Norway, Sweden no longer requires treatment against echinococcosis for dogs coming from the EU/EEA. One step fewer.

What if you're coming from further away?

From a non-EU country (United Kingdom, United States…), timelines are considerably longer: a rabies serology test may be required, sometimes with several months of waiting. Plan well ahead and have your vet guide you. Conversely, from Norway, a dog can enter Sweden freely — useful to know if your route takes you through there.
