Dog-sledding sports have a real advantage: you can start with minimal gear. But what little you need must be right, because it ensures your safety and your dog's comfort. Here are the basic pieces, in order of importance.

The traction harness (the key piece)

This is the one thing you cannot compromise on. A traction harness distributes effort across the chest and shoulders, without hindering breathing or movement. It has nothing to do with a walking harness. We devote an entire guide to it because fit is so critical — a poorly fitted harness causes injury over time.

The shock-absorbing line

It connects your dog to you. Its elastic section absorbs jolts: your dog doesn't feel a sharp tug in the back, and neither do you. Essential whenever there is traction, whether on foot or on skis.

The attachment point on the human side

In canicross and cani-hiking, this is a cani-cross belt — wide, sitting low on the hips so it doesn't strain your back. In ski-joëring, you move to a harness designed for gliding, with a quick-release system — being able to detach with one gesture is safety, not a luxury.

Specifics by discipline

For ski-joëring: cross-country skis suited to the terrain, and above all, mastery of your own gliding technique before you add a dog to the equation.

For cani-hiking and canicross: good trail shoes — that's all. Simplicity itself.

For bikejoring: a spreader bar fixed to the mountain bike that keeps the line away from the front wheel.

What people often forget

A headlamp for outings in dim light (Lapland winters are generous with darkness). Something to give your dog water. And a small first-aid kit for paw pads. Nothing superfluous, but these details save a day out.
