Choosing and fitting your dog's pulling harness correctly

If you had to do just one thing right in dog sports, it would be this. A well-chosen harness lets your dog give full power without constraint; a poorly fitted harness rubs, compresses, and eventually puts the dog off pulling. Here's how to get it right.

The main types of harness

The X-back is the classic for distance work. The straps form an X across the back and the load distributes all the way to the rear of the body. Ideal for ski-joëring and long outings, on a dog with a sufficiently long back.

The H-back (or back-strap harness) distributes load differently and suits a variety of body shapes, including more compact dogs.

The short harness stops higher on the back. Widely used in cani-cross and bikejoring, it frees the hindquarters and bothers shorter-backed dogs less.

None is "better" in absolute terms: the right harness is the one that fits your dog.

Measure before you buy

Two measurements matter most: the chest girth just behind the front legs, and the back length, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Note them and compare them to the maker's chart rather than a generic "size M". When in doubt between two sizes, a fitting decides.

Check the fit (the three-point test)

The neck opening must not compress the throat: you should be able to slip two flat fingers under the neck strap.

The harness must not ride up on the trachea when the dog pulls: the pull should bear on the chest, never on the throat.

No strap should rub under the armpits or hinder shoulder movement. Trot the dog and watch: the stride should stay free.

Signs it doesn't fit

Worn hair or reddened skin at friction points, a dog that freezes or slows as soon as you harness it, a strap that gapes or that digs in: all signals to correct right away. A harness also needs replacing as it wears—seams and elastic tire.
