Cani-cross, cani-hiking or ski-joëring: which to choose with your dog?
Published on 28 June 2026

Dog-sledding sports, traction, elastic leashes: these words hide several disciplines in reality, and the three most common ones are often confused. Here's how to find your way and choose the one that suits you and your dog.
The common principle
All rest on the same idea: your dog wears a traction harness, an elastic leash connects you, and the effort is made as a team. What changes is you — walking at a steady pace, walking while running, or skiing — and therefore the intensity demanded of the pair.
At a glance
| Discipline | You do | Intensity | Season | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cani-hiking | You walk | Gentle to moderate | Year-round | Beginners, dogs and humans of all levels |
| Cani-cross | You run | Sustained | Frost-free / mild summer | Runners, energetic dogs |
| Ski-joëring | You ski | Moderate to sustained | Winter, on snow | Experienced skiers, motivated dogs |
Cani-hiking: the entry point
You walk, the dog helps you move forward. It's the most accessible activity: no need to run or ski, and it's the perfect terrain to learn direction commands calmly. If you're starting out in dog-sledding sports — you, your dog, or both — begin here. Most pairs build their foundations this way before moving on to something else.
Cani-cross: for runners
Same equipment, but you run. The effort increases for both you and the dog, and the connection comes down to shared rhythm. It demands cardio effort on both sides of the leash, so it's reserved for dogs in good shape and people who love to run. Watch the heat: cani-cross is practised during cool hours.
Ski-joëring: the winter version
You put on cross-country skis, the dog pulls, and the whole thing glides through the snow. It's the finest winter expression of dog-sledding sports, but it requires one condition the other two don't: you already know how to ski. The traction adds to controlled gliding, not the other way around.
How to decide
Ask yourself three questions. What season are you coming? (Winter points toward ski-joëring, the rest of the year toward cani-hiking or cani-cross.) What is your physical comfort level? (Walking, running, skiing.) And where is your dog? (A dog discovering traction always starts gently.)
Good news: these disciplines are not mutually exclusive. Many of our visitors try several over the course of a week, starting gently and building in intensity.
The Skimate approach
We adapt the programme to your pair rather than the other way around. We often start you with cani-hiking to establish the basics, then open up toward cani-cross or ski-joëring depending on your fitness, your dog, and the season. You leave knowing exactly which discipline suits you — and why.
Not sure which discipline is right for you? Tell us about your pair, and we'll guide you before you even arrive.
