Canicross hiking: walking connected to your dog in the wilderness

Between a simple leashed walk and canicross racing, there is a practice that brings everyone together: canicross hiking. You walk, the dog helps you move forward, and the effort becomes teamwork. It is often the best entry point into dog sports.

What exactly is it

You wear a belt, your dog wears a pulling harness, and a shock-absorbing line connects you. On uphill and flat sections, the dog pulls and lightens your load; on descents, you manage the pace together. Where a regular leash strains your arms, this system distributes the effort and protects your back as well as the dog's.

Why start with this

It is less intense than canicross: no need to run, so accessible to many teams, including dogs discovering pulling and people who do not see themselves sprinting. It is also ideal terrain for learning basic commands — go forward, slow down, turn left, turn right — in a calm setting.

First steps

First get the dog used to the harness, without a line, by rewarding. Then add the line and let them feel a light, pleasant tension. Introduce directions one at a time, with simple words that stay the same. The consistency of your vocabulary matters more than its sophistication: choose your words and stick with them.

Keep the first outings short and enjoyable. A dog that ends happy will return eager; an exhausted dog will associate the harness with a chore.

Safety and respect for the environment

Watch out for heat in summer — canicross hiking is done in the morning or evening, never in the middle of the day. Bring water. And remember that in Sweden, from March 1 to August 20, the dog must remain on lead in nature: the pulling line meets this requirement perfectly while keeping the joy intact.

Experiencing it in Laponia

Our trails around Lilla Arvidsträsk are ideal for canicross hiking: forests, lakesides, gentle elevation changes. It is the main activity in the shoulder season at Skimate, and an excellent way to build your team before perhaps moving on to ski-joëring in winter.
